Claying

At this point, you may be wondering what the heck clay has to do with auto detailing. Automotive clay has been around for decades and is an amazing invention. If your paint doe snot feel as smooth as glass, then clay is right for you. Clay is a light abrasive that attacks surface contamination such as paint overspray, indistrial fallout, oxidation, rust, and dirt. It lightly grinds away the exposed microscopic contaminants, but is safe for your paint. Numerous companies have their version of clay. Any fine grade automotive clay such as mother's, four star, sonus, etc. will work great. You will also need to pick up some lubricant for the clay. ANy quality quick detailer will work for this.

Before claying, wash your car using the method mentioned above, but do not bother drying so long as your car is in a shaded area, which will prevent water spots. Break off about a 20g piece of clay and massage it in your hands to soften it up. Once it is fairly soft and pliable, smash the clay into a thin pancake shape. To use the clay, spary a small area with lubricant and rub the clay back and forth while applying light pressure. COntinue working the area until the clay glides effortlessly. Pick up the clay and check for contamination. SHould the clay appear dirty then simply reshape it and continue on to your next section. IF THE CLAY EVER TOUCHES THE GROUND DISCARD IMMEDIATELY. If any dirt or rocks become imbedded in the clay it will scratch your paint. Do this for the entire car and then rewash. Upon completion your car should feel super smooth!
